A Look Back at the American Jumping Derby
Here is a priceless look back at some archival footage filmed by Gordon Wright & narrated by George Morris of Mason Phelps’ the American Jumping Derby. This challenging and rugged derby brought the grit of European show jumping to the U.S. courtesy of Mr. Phelps. Held at his stunning family estate in Rhode Island, the Derby was truly a gem of the show jumping circuit from 1976 through 1988.
Excellent article, educational, historical, and well written – oh, and of course, an amazing thoroughbred.
Thank you Lynn, we’ll be sure to tell Marianne! So glad you liked it.
Thank you for writing such a wonderful article about my Dad’s horse. It’s fun to see online the pictures that I grew up with in our family den. She was an incredible jumper and a beautiful thoroughbred.
Thank you! So thrilled to hear you liked it! It’s an amazing story. Must have been very cool to see her in action!
My cousin, Cynthia, and I weren’t even born yet. As a bona fide horse-addict, I always loved the picture of Circus Rose in the den at my aunt’s house.
Looking forward to seeing old Friends both Horses and people. Seeing August A. Busch Jr. mentioned brought back memories of my good friend. He always took a little time out of his busy day to talk with me when our paths would cross on the Horse Show circuit or in the Charlottesville/Keswick area when he came for a visit.
That is so cool! Thanks for sharing it with us Doug.
What a wonderful article. I am piecing together some family history for my children. They are great grandchildren of Joe Green. My husband Bill Powell was his grandson. I am intrigued with Joe Greens story. My mother in law Joahn Powell ( Green) will be traveling next week to see us and look forward to some family photos she will be passing down to the children.
Thank you so much! We love spotlighting these wonderful TB’s.
